Arsenal Captain Robin Van Persie And Vermaelen Also Appointed Vice-Captain

Arsenal have confirmed Robin van Persie as the club's new captain following Cesc Fabregas' move to Barcelona and van Persie takes the armband from Fabregas who completed his the protracted move to a hometown Barcelona on Monday and belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen has been promoted to vice-captain to Van Persie and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger believes the Dutchman will prove to be a leader in the team in his new role.

Van Persie who will take the armband for this weekend's clash with Liverpool as he is suspended for the Champions League clash with Udinese, is ready to take up responsibility that goes with being captain in the team and as captain you are an ambassador for a club and i'm ready for that Van Persie told the official matchday programme.

International career for a Van Persie was a U-21 international and took part of the 2004 and 2006 European Championship qualifying and he was used in a wider role as a left wing due to the preference of the experienced Ruud van Nistelrooy in a striker role and he was already in the senior squad for the FIFA World Cup and he is a 1st caps for the Netherlands in less than the span of a week first in a 2–0 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying win over Romania on 4 June 2005.
Vermaelen joined Arsenal from Ajax for an initial fee of €10 million, rising to €12 million on 19 June 2009 and signing a 4 year contract after Kolo Toure surrendered the number five jersey to him upon joining Manchester City Vermaelen with William Gallas formed Arsenal's central defence pairing and he made his Premier League debut on 15 August 2009 in a game against Everton and scored in the 37th minute he became the 84th Arsenal player to score on their debut.
