Messi fears England threat

http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/
Argentina forward Lionel Messi believes that England number among the leading contenders to lift the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Many people's favourites for the tournament, which starts 2 weeks today, are Spain and Brazil, but the 22-year-old puts Fabio Capello's side in the same category.

"I think that right now, the strongest sides going into the World Cup are Spain, England and Brazil," Messi told CNN International. "They had a strong, easy qualifying and are very tough."

Lionel Messi was a little more coy about his own side's chances. "Hopefully, it will be my World Cup, Argentina's World Cup and that we hit the ground running and play up to people's expectations and win the World Cup," he said.

2010 FIFA World Cup: Top 10 Forwards To Look Out For

http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/
Previously, I had listed the “World Cup Top scorer” and “The Top 15 Players Not Going To South Africa” which was a lot more easier job than ranking forwards.

It is also difficult to categorize wingers, and I have considered those wingers who play more like a forward with an eye for goal.

Selecting the top 2 forwards was a piece of cake but as the list progressed it got tougher and tougher to rank one above the other.

There are dissimilar genres of strikers, but the ultimate goal is to deposit the ball back in the net. We have all types of strikers on this list. Let's have a look at them.

10. Carloz Tevez

9. Luis Fabiano

8. Robin Van Persie

7. Arjen Robben

6. David Villa

5. Fernando Torres

4. Didier Drogba

3. Wayne Rooney

2. Cristiano Ronaldo

1. Lionel Messi

Honorable Mention - Samuel Eto

Samuel Eto'o was pretty close but he isn't the same player that he was once, and Cameroon are not going anywhere in the World Cup. So, he will not have much impact.

2010 FIFA World Cup: Argentina's Lionel Messi 'Embarrassed' By Comparisons To Diego Maradona

http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/
Argentina star Lionel Messi has declared that he is embarrassed to be compared to FIFA World Cup winning legend and current coach Diego Maradona.

The Barcelona forward and current FIFA World Player of the Year is often judged against the abilities of the past master Maradona but Lionel Messi says he doesn't like the comparisons, labeling them an "offense" to 'El Pelusa'.

The talismanic 22-year-old also declared that he still has to prove himself at a FIFA finals to be considered amongst the greats.

"I do not like it. I am embarrassed that I get compared to Diego. It's an offense [to him]. To be the best player in the world I have to prove it at the World Cup," Lionel Messi is quoted as saying by Sport before adding that he is proud to represent the Albicelestes.

"I’m Argentine and I like to play for my country."

Argentina kick off their World Cup campaign vs. Nigeria on June 12.

Ireland climb Fifa rankings

http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/
Ireland have climbed 2 places on the Fifa World Rankings after last night’s 2-1 win against Paraguay in the RDS.

The win, Ireland’s first in 5 games, saw them rise to 41st place. Northern Ireland are also up 1 place to 56th while England remain 8th

The leader board is topped by Brazil in 1st and hotly tipped Spain in 2nd.

Ireland will get the chance to climb further up the ranks if they can secure their 2nd win in a week when they go up against Algeria in the RDS on Friday.

The win will have come as little consolation to the players but, many of whom are still struggling to get over the disappointment of failing to qualify.

“Everyone is just geared up to the World Cup and it is pretty hard to take at the moment with everything that's surrounding England,” said Preston’s Sean St Ledger. "Everyone is talking about it, and not to be part of it hurts."

World Cup Top scorer

Ronaldo

Country: Brazil

Goals: 15 (4 goals during 1998 France World Cup, 8 in 2002 South Korea World Cup and 3 in 2006 World Cup, Germany. )

Ronaldo is nowhere near his old form and the once phenomenal player's career is limping towards retirement. Still, his unique record remains unbeaten! Germany's Miroslav Klose, the only player who has come close to breaking Ronaldo's record. With 10 goals to his name, let's see whether Miroslav Klose could make it this time.

http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/Gerd Muller

Country: Germany

Goals: 14

This great German is one among the all-time best players in the world. Gerd Muller scored 10 goals at the 1970 Mexico World Cup. Gerd Muller remained on the top spot for long until Ronaldo eclipsed his record during the 2006 World Cup.

Fondly called Batigol, Gabriel Omar Batistuta is ranked 5th. http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/
Inter Milan manager Jose Mourinho might have confirmed his status as the greatest thing since sliced bread but the argument over which is the best international football team in the world is just about to begin.

On the face of it there seem to be 2 outstanding teams in the world. The 2 teams, in fact, that head FIFA’s rankings – a rare moment of accuracy for a table that places Portugal in 3rd place ahead of world champions Italy even if Carlos Queiroz’s men had to scrape through to the finals via a playoff.

The nations in question – as if you couldn’t guess – are Brazil and Spain.

2010 FIFA World Cup: Aussies edge New Zealand

http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/
2010 FIFA World Cup: Substitute Brett Holman struck with the last kick of the game to give Australia an undeserved 2-1 victory in their FIFA World Cup farewell friendly Vs. New Zealand at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Brett Holman has been criticized for his lack of goals in national team colours in the past, but did his chances of booking his place on the plane to South Africa no harm when he serenely converted after Carl Valeri's clever lob in the 3rd minute of added time. It was just the 26-year-old AZ Alkmaar forward's 2nd goal in 30 international appearances and capped an otherwise forgettable display from the hosts - albeit in their 1st warm-up ahead of the finals.

New Zealand had gone ahead credit to Chris Killen's close-range strike after 16 minutes. It took a debut goal from young midfielder Dario Vidosic to bring Australia level after 57 minutes before Brett Holman clinched the win late on.

Kaka will be fit for 2010 FIFA World Cup

http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/
Brazilian genius Kaka has insisted he will be 100% fit for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, despite recent concerns over form and fitness for his club and after missing last Sunday's match for his club side Real Madrid.

2010 FIFA World Cup : Prize money and club payments

http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/
The total prize money on offer for the tournament was confirmed by FIFA as $420 million, a 60 % increase on the 2006 tournament Before the tournament, each participating team would receive $1 million, for preparation costs. Once at the tournament, teams exiting at the group stage would receive $8 million. Thereafter, the prize money would be distributed as follows:

• $9 million - Round of 16

• $18 million - Quarter-finals

• $20 million - Semi-finals

• $24 million - Runners up

• $30 million - Winners

In a first for the World Cup, there would also be payments made by FIFA to the domestic clubs of the players representing their national teams at the tournament. This would see a total of €26 million being paid to domestic clubs, amounting to just over €1,000 per player per day.

This was the result of an agreement reached in 2008 between FIFA and European clubs to disband the G-14 and drop their claims for compensation dating back to 2005 over the financial cost of injuries sustained to their players while on international duty, such as that from Belgian club Charleroi S.C. for injury to Morroco's Abdelmajid Oulmers in a friendly game in 2004, and from English club Newcastle United for an injury to England's Michael Owen in the 2006 World Cup.

Michael Ballack Out of 2010 FIFA World Cup Due to Injury

http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/
Germany Captain Michael Ballack will not be participating in the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa because of an ankle injury.

Michael Ballack, 33, tore ligaments in his right ankle during Chelsea’s FA Cup final against Portsmouth. The injury was caused by a poorly timed Portsmouth’s Kevin-Prince Boateng tackle.

Michael Ballack currently has a cast on the foot and will not be able to train for a minimum of 8 weeks, according to the German soccer federation.

Although he is expected to make a full recovery, the injury still couldn’t have come at a worse time for the German.

Michael Ballack told German Television, “It's very disappointing, but I have to accept it, its football and you’ve to live with it. ... I am angry, clearly.”

Michael Ballack has previously scored 42 goals in 98 appearances for the Germans. His injury will also force Coach Joachim Loew to make dramatic changes to his lineup.

FIFA World Cup 2010: France Squad To Be Trimmed To 24 By Monday - Report

http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/
The untidy saga of the naming of France’s FIFA World Cup squad is set to take another step closer to completion on Monday, when coach Raymond Domenech is set to trim a provisional panel of 30 down to 24.

Raymond Domenech was expected to name a definitive list of 23 names last Tuesday evening, but he sidestepped expectations by changing his mind and naming a provisional panel of 30 at the last minute, giving him further time to ruminate. 6 days later, he is set to cut 6 men from his list, according to the AFP news agency.

Apparently, Raymond Domenech wants to take 24 players to Tignes, where les Bleus will undergo a training camp, but there is still significant doubt over the fitness of Arsenal centre-back William Gallas, so the additional player to the 23-man panel FIFA rules allow for the World Cup.

France are meant to stay at L'Ecrin du Val Claret, where they camped before the 2006 World Cup finals, in which they were defeated by Italy in the final on penalty kicks. Superstition has drawn Raymond Domenech back to the venue, though the coach must hope this rather shambolic week is not repeated over the course of the next 2 months.

FIFA World Cup awards - Golden Shoe

http://southafrica-2010-fifa-worldcup.blogspot.com/
The Golden Shoe Award goes to the top goalscorer of the FIFA World Cup.

The award was introduced at the 1930 World Cup. The 1994 World Cup in the United States was the first time that Silver and Bronze boots awards were added to reward the second and third top scorers in the tournament.[3] Since 1994, if there is more than one player with the same amount of goals, the tie-breaker goes to the player who has contributed the most assists (with the FIFA Technical Study Group deciding whether an assist is to be counted as such). If there is still more than one player, the tie-breaker goes to the player who has played the least amount of time.
